The City’s Own Report Confirms It: Crime is Destroying Downtown Dallas

For years, Dallas leadership has downplayed the crime crisis in Downtown, but their own commissioned research now tells a different story. A report by Downtown Dallas, Inc. (DDI) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) confirms what KDS has been saying—crime is rising, businesses are leaving, and city policies are failing. Since 2019, overall crime in Downtown has increased by 34 percent, with violent crime up 42 percent.
Despite this, arrests have dropped by 12 percent, while homeless-related crime now makes up 69 percent of violent crime arrests, nearly doubling since 2019. Public spaces like parks, transit stops, and plazas have become major crime hotspots.
Businesses are leaving, and AT&T may be next. If they pull out, it will cost the city $62 million a year and wipe out $2.7 billion in property value. Those staying are spending millions on private security while property values in Downtown continue to fall.
Instead of channeling city resources, the city is focused on PR projects like pedestrian zones and beautification. The report admits their approach is to move crime around instead of stopping it. Community courts and mental health teams haven’t worked, yet they keep doubling down.
This isn’t just a crime problem—it’s an economic crisis. If AT&T leaves, others will quickly follow. Investors are already pulling out, and taxpayers are left paying the price while criminals walk free. KDS has warned about this for years, and now the city’s own data proves it.
Public safety must come first. More policing, less spin. More enforcement, fewer excuses. If city leadership won’t act, residents and businesses must demand it. Check out our blog post for the full breakdown. Either local officials act now, or the collapse of Downtown continues.
