FAR NORTHEAST DALLAS

Suspect arrested in fatal shooting

of 20-year-old man in April

Dallas police said Monday they arrested a man suspected in a fatal shooting in far northeast Dallas.

Damontray Lavell Tavonne Handy, 21, faces a murder charge in the slaying of Raquon Travis.

Officers were called about 10:30 a.m. April 11 to an apartment in the 12900 block of Audelia Road, where they found Travis, 20, who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police identified Handy as a suspect a little more than a week later but did not say how they connected him to the shooting.

Handy was taken into custody by a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force and booked into the Dallas County jail Monday afternoon. His bail had not been set, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

MOUNTAIN CREEK

Police arrest man who they

say killed his own mother

Dallas police have arrested a man who they say killed his mother.

Police were called just before 9 a.m. Monday to the 3500 block of South Ledbetter Drive, near West Kiest Boulevard in Dallas’ Mountain Creek area, where a woman had been reported dead inside a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they were told that Rhonda Johnson, 51, had been killed by her son, 34-year-old Johnny Lynn Jones, police said.

Jones was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives, then booked into the Dallas County jail on a murder charge. His bail had not been set Monday evening, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

State records show that Jones was a registered sex offender who had been released from prison in October. He served eight years for indecency with a child by sexual contact in Fisher County, about 200 miles west of Dallas, involving a victim who was 16. He also has been convicted of burglary, evading arrest and forgery, court records show.
