Black VICTIMS Matter (but not to our city leaders)

On Tuesday July 6th, as most of us were getting back to work after the July 4thweekend, an 87-year old black woman named Anita Thompson was murdered in her own home in Oak Cliff. The suspect, Andre Buggs, is a 58-year old black man. Ms. Thompson had previously reported an attempted break in—likely by the same perpetrator—on Sunday July 4thbut police didn’t even show up.

Last month, a 7-year old girl was stabbed near JJ Craft Park in a primarily black neighborhood. The suspect was 24-year old black woman Troyshaye More Hall. When neighbors attempted to call 911 they were placed on an 11 minute 41 second hold before the call was even answered.

In the eyes of City Manager T.C Broadnax, Assistant City Manager Jon Fortune, and inept Council Members like Adam Bazaldua, Omar Narvaez, and Paula Blackmon, the message is clear: BLACK VICTIMS DON’T MATTER.

Our city leaders don’t care that our murder rate this year is already outpacing last year where Dallas saw 252 homicides. And yet, DPD is seriously understaffed particularly after last year’s $7 Million “defund the police” vote.

Despite a growing population, Dallas Police has around 3100 officers down from over 3600 in 2011. If our leaders actually care about black lives, they will give us the 2000 more officers we need to keep our city and ALL communities safe.
